POEM FOR KALOKO HONOKOHAU

Swim fast little fish
the tide of change is rising
Airplanes and black iwa
circle overhead

The fish pond is filled
with choking invasives.
Careful, careful now
Walk surely and steady on

Remnants of remembering
Know steadfast and surely
that their echoes resound
in the surf

Their breath fills us
in our dreams.
All who came before
are here still.

Laugh little ones
The salty songs are renewed.
